  1. There are several advantages mentioned by Ferris and Hedgcock. Since writing portfolio could include multiple drafts for the finished product, students are able to see the progress of their own writing processes. In addition, revision is encouraged after getting a feedback from a teacher since students are given a chance to revise the writing to include the final draft of their writing in their portfolio. Therefore, students are more motivated to improve their writing by revising. Even though writing portfolios have many advantages, according to Ferris and Hedgcock, there are limitations as well. One of the limitations that is mentioned is how raters can give a score fairly when the products chosen to include in the portfolio by each student can vary in terms of genre and complexity. In order to avoid the wide variety of products in the portfolio, I think teachers should give a certain freedom on the selection but give some limitation to what can be included in the portfolio so that the variation will be minimal.

  2. One of the disadvantages of using a portfolio as a means of assesment is that the evaluation of the portfolio is based on teacher judgement versus mechanical scoring. However, Ferris and Hedgcock suggest that using a portfolio would be benificial because it serves as a collection of a student's work and of their accomplishments. The authors also state that using a portfolio allows students to reflect on their progress and their work in the classroom.

  3. It seems that prime advantage to having a portfolio is being able to see the students progress over time, additionally, I personally feel that being able to choose from some of the previous writing assignments and building up on them, as well as studying their own writing can be very beneficial. However, one of the disadvantages is the issue of scoring, it can be overcome by coming with some guidelines though rather than judgment to keep things equal among students.
