Ch. 5 Question

In chapter 5 Ferris and Hedgcock talk about responding to student writing. The authors discuss about particular points in the writing process feedback should be given in order for the feedback to be effective, giving feedback on content and organization and feeedback on linguistic form, and types of feedback a teacher can give. According to the authors, how can a teacher effectively give feedback to ESL students' writing?

  1. According to the authors, the most effective ways of giving student feedback involves a combination of comments on form/content, but also on grammar and structures. The authors also mentioned how the teacher should give this feeback, it was suggested the best ways were to post the comments on the margin of the paper, due to their approximation and a short small summary at the end of the paper.

  2. According to the authors, there are some suggestions for teacher commentary:
    1. Read through the whole student paper before making any comments.
    2. Have scoring rubric, checklist,...to identify possible feedback points.
    3. Do not give too many feedback, some teachers give more feedback and it is longer than what student has written. So select 2 or 4 high- priority feedback points for that particular student and writing task.
    4. Need to have both marginal and end-note feedback.
5.Make sure the feedback is clear, easy to understand, no jargon.
    6. Give Ss time to pose any questions relating to T's feedback.
    7. Ask Ss to write cover memo in which explain how they have considered and addressed comments they have received from the teacher (maybe from peers also)

  3. The authors state that feedback should be given after the paper is read through entirely. There should be marginal feedback. If the teacher does choose to give both content and grammatical feedback, they should use a different color pen to distinguish the two.
